Plastic surgery; spell out the potential pitfalls

Approximately 20% of all clinical negligence claims in plastic surgery include claims relating to consent to treatment, according to a new study claims.

And claims settled this figure rises to 28% according to an analysis of claims made for medical indemnity organization Medical Defence Union in the last edition of the organization that published this week.

In other cases, surgery resulted in scarring or asymmetry, or simply to produce a result that does not meet the expectations of the patient, the patient again claimed they would not agree to the procedure to be aware of the risks.

In several cases, the request to be resolved after consulting the expert said the patient should have undergone a psychological evaluation before the surgery - for example, in the case of patients who require a second or third breast augmentation procedure .

And Dr. Armstrong, adds: "A credible consensus process is an important preparation for all types of surgical procedure, but may be especially critical in the field of cosmetic surgery, where patients seeking physical" perfection "may have high levels, even unrealistic, expectations. In many cases, aesthetic procedures performed in healthy subjects and the negative impact may be less well tolerated than in cases where surgery is undertaken for treatment of organic pathology. "
