Look 7.2 years younger after plastic surgery

People often get plastic surgery in hopes of turning back the aging clock, but a new study gives an idea of ​​how many years they might be able to take off.

In a recent study, evaluators examine before and after photos of facelift patients thought the patient looked younger, on average, than they looked for their operations.

According to researchers at the University of Toronto in Canada and the North Shore University Health System in Evanston, Illinois, a number of plastic surgeons "have a tendency to change the terms younger and fresher to use, but precise quantification of these characteristics has remained elusive."

Hoping to come up with "an objective measure of surgical success," and not to depend solely on patient-reported satisfaction with the success of cosmetic surgery procedures to assess, the researchers asked undergraduate medical students to take pictures of 60 patients (54 View women and six men, age 45 to 72) for whom one of the doctors, Dr. Peter A. Adamson had served.

Of the surgical patients, 22 had facelifts and neck lifts only, 17 had surgery on the upper and lower eyelids and 21 had the first two procedures and forehead lifts.

The 40 medical student "judges" were divided into four groups of 10. Each group viewed the same set of randomized patients pictures - 30 pictures per group, including photos of before and six months after the operation - and with estimated ages for the patients.

On average, medical students estimated that the patients were 1.7 years younger than their actual chronological age before surgery and 8.9 years younger than their chronological age after surgery.

Patients more procedures generally looked younger, the reviewers reported. For patients in the first group who had facelifts observed only age was 5.7 years in the facelift and eyelid group, it was 7.5 years and in the group who also had forehead lifts was 8.4 years.

In other words, at least when it comes to Adamson's patients, it is not just a surgery recipients who seem to think they look younger - less likely, the surgeons proposed.

"Our results show a modest but significant reduction in perceived age after aesthetic surgery of the face," the co-authors wrote.

"Although motivations for cosmetic surgery can vary, a prevailing concept of the wish for a more youthful appearance to achieve while retaining its own unique characteristics and identifying attributes. Given these expectations, an average 7.2-year decrease of the observed age is indeed consistent with this goal, "they added.
