Plastic surgery solution for some, excess for others

Plastic surgery seems to be growing in popularity, new figures show.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 20 percent of women under the age of 34 suffered some form of plastic surgery in 2010 The most common forms are breast augmentation and liposuction.

would never get myself plastic surgery," said Jaron Polatis, a sophomore biology major from Rigby Idaho. "You can really tell when other people have, and it makes me look totally fake. I do not think it is necessary, unless someone has gotten into an accident.

" According to ASAPS statistics, nearly 1.6 million people underwent surgical cosmetic procedures in 2010, about 200000 more than in 2008 and has grown over 164 percent since 1997

"Plastic surgery is a choice and that choice should be started at a legal age," said Cory Lemieux, a junior Computer Engineering major from Beaver Dam, Ariz "But I think everyone should be proud of natural beauty bestowed upon them.

" Although only 1 percent of young adults ages 18 and get plastic surgery, a student feels like to be the ideal age to start.
"Plastic surgery does not change the personality of a person," said Alexa Terakawa, a St. George Paul Mitchell hair graduate school. "It is perfectly OK [to have plastic surgery], just like men and women dye their hair put on make-up, or tattoo their skin. Eighteen should be the legal age for cosmetic purposes. " According to ASAPS, 18 Americans 18 and younger underwent plastic surgery in 2009 These statistics differ because doctors can not get accurate statistics. With18 is the legal age for breast augmentation and some cosmetic surgeries, doctors have legal alternatives or off-label brands can use with parental consent.

Terakawa, who has undergone plastic surgery, said he loves breast implants and will not be changed by making the choice to get to 18 According to an article in the Journal of Adolescent Health entitled, "Teens and Cosmetic Surgery; Focus on breast augmentation liposuction a d, "by Diana Zuckerman Ph.D. and Anisha Abraham, MD, MPH, published in 2008, young adults continue to grow through their 20s. Some interventions could actually be deteriorated over the years. The weight gain and physical development in parts of the body can actually lead to unsatisfying results of surgery, that instead of fostering self-esteem, adults are dissatisfied with their procedure. "I think plastic surgery is a waste of money," said Gabe Phillips, a senior communications major from Hurricane. "But if someone feels the need to change something to feel confident or whatever, then I would not object to it.

" Utah is one of the top states in per capita on plastic surgery. Salt Lake City has six plastic surgeons per 100,000 people, compared with New York, with four per 100,000 people, and Los Angeles with 4.1 per 100,000 people.
