Billy Crystal, definitely was not the most fashionable choice to host Oscars last night. There has appeared in a decent movie since "Analyze This" in 2002, and I'm pretty liberal with the word "decent". This isn'ta cannon rolls in a biting sarcasm assessments, interventions and loathing celebrity installation. Crystal is old and increasingly irrelevant with each passing year. And thanks to the terrible plastic surgeon, is certainly not easy on the eyes either.
Television critics and pundits today or water cooler complaining about or praising the performance of the crystal. The views of the audience is more likely predictable based simply on age. If you like your age maybe, but went to bed early. If you're young, you thought it was too long, too boring, too predictable and expressed their displeasure at your every Twitter or Facebook.
Each time the loud, opinionated and influential younger demographic complains about the Oscar host. This same group may also be heard chastising "Saturday Night Live" weekly "is not funny anymore." Everything is lame to many of my classmates, with the possible exception of internet memes. It is always impossible to please, so that when the crystal was tapped to host the awards, which chimed in on the decision with great contempt, while offering no alternative.
What some people fail to understand is that Billy Crystal is a part of a rare and endangered species of true entertainment. He can act, sing and dance. The charms the audience with the right timing and quick wit, and brings a sense of warmth to the stage. With millions of eyes watching every move I never sweat. They are comfortable on a stage where so many others have failed. Most importantly, he respects the Oscars and treats with respect. It is indifferent to the opportunity, like James Franco seemed to be the last year, but still make it look easy.
The Academy Awards are not nervous, it should be. Some of the jokes are corny. Some of the speeches will suck. Most of the evening will be predictable. We know that what happens inside If you do not like, do not watch.
Oscar is very different from each other resulting from the awards. It takes more hype, coverage, ridicule and praise. There is a timelessness about the show, and when done properly, the performance will be operated as a love letter to film. The Academy Awards are bigger than individuals as the host, the candidates, even the possible winners. It is our shared love for the movies, and I think that show last night did an excellent job reminding us that.
The testimony of the actors and the required film editing was perfect, Esperanza Spalding's performance "What a Wonderful World" during the section of memory performance was superb and the Cirque du Soleil show was bananas.
Billy Crystal, it was simply the perfect choice to be the master of ceremonies in the biggest night in Hollywood, was the only option. He moved to look good pace along, provided a few laughs and let the film is the star. And when viewed in the context of recent train wrecks posing as a pair of Oscar ceremonies, the Billy Crystal, killed last night.
